It is my understanding from having played various online games and offline RPGs that the "Nightmare" is a magical fantasy creature, not of this world, that appears mostly equine in form, except for the fiery bits on the feet/tail/mane, and its ability to use magic/cast spells. It is also thought to be much stronger than a regular horse. This is really just my take on the subject, for I have never met a Nightmare face to face, and if I did, I would most certainly try to "tame" it. *chuckle*
