It is my understanding from having played various online games and offline RPGs that the "Nightmare" is a magical fantasy creature, not of this world, that appears mostly equine in form, except for the fiery bits on the feet/tail/mane, and its ability to use magic/cast spells. It is also thought to be much stronger than a regular horse. This is really just my take on the subject, for I have never met a Nightmare face to face, and if I did, I would most certainly try to "tame" it. *chuckle* =P

P6/Milhorse/mist brushes `spiritsighs & digital painting w/my beloved wacom.

This is not some "horse brush" this was a render I did in Poser 6 and painted over, just as the credits say above

Thanks for looking.

It lies in the name, really. It's a mare that comes at night, and traditionally your bad dreams were apparently caused because this creature kidnapped you in your sleep and rode around with you on its back.

... Or something. Crazy stuff.

I really like how you portray it though. Top notch!

you should probably credit the maker of the base horse image. >.> i've seen the brushes where this horse comes from. So you need to credit them.

Also, perhaps the person who made the brushes, has the horse, and the pose, and therefor created the brushes themselves much the same way I created this work.

And if the brushes are identical to this image with the painted mane and tail then perhaps they have stolen from me.

Do you have the link to these brushes, because I would love to see if that is the case.

they dont have the painted mane. but i asked the person who made brushes and they said that it wasnt theirs. i'm sorry. it just looked like theirs. >.< i'm sorry. it was just the look of the 3d model that made me think that it was someone elses. It's amazing though. =D

Really? You should read what I did credit, because this wasn't a brush! P6 is a program called Poser 6, and is used to render 3d images, the horse used is the "milhorse" which is also known as the millennium horse from DAZ3d which I own, its a 3d model. You can find it here [link] and it comes with various poses for which to apply to the horse, plus you can buy additional poses to make using the horse easier, and this is one of those poses.

So before you accuse me of not crediting a source, please be sure you know what you are talking about as I do not take to this type of accusation very lightly, I have worked hard to get where I am.

Also before going about accusing random people on their deviations to which you know nothing about, be sure to send them a note in private if you have a problem with something because you MIGHT just be WRONG as you are in this case.

I don't even own horse brushes, I don't need them, as I can render out things like this MYSELF in 3D and do as much painting as I like, or I can simply paint it myself.

Thanks though.

Man does this bring back memories :D

Have you ever heard of the Wizardry series? It's one of the oldest RPG series around. The final one, wizardry 8, had unicorns in it, but they were pure evil. The 3 kinds were Diremare, Frightmare and Nightmare, and they were the terror of adventurers, with their magic and horns. But the worst part is that when Nightmares reared up, it would scare your characters so bad that they turned against each other.

Well, for returning memories of my scary childhood gaming experience, I just have to say I love this picture for more than just the terrified nostalgia. Good job :D

Beautifuly done, it reminds me of the Piers Anthony Xanth books. In his science-fiction/fantasy series, nightmares were mares that could not be held by conventional means that actually delivered nightmares to those that deserved them.

Your art is incredibly impressive. I'm a painter myself, but don't bother to look at my gallery; I don't post anything here anymore whatsoever. -plagarism runs rampant-

My wife is terrified of horses and has nightmares of them frequently. I know she'd be thrilled to see this. ;)

Anyway, to end a rather pointless comment, I greatly enjoy your work and hope you continue to produce beautiful works such as these.

There are many games, Kings Quest 5 comes to mind first where Night MARE was a black horse that could take you to the land of the dead... I have also seen them as horse with manes, feet and tails of fire. I believe it really comes from the olden days when a horse would look "hag-ridden" and die in the middle of the night.. according to our farmers lore, it is when a horse is found in the morning covered in sweat and dead from what looks like it was ridden hard all night long.... actually it was from drinking too cold of water on too hot of a night... however.. enough of my rambling.. hehe.. this picture is awesomely beautiful! Thanks for sharing it with all of us!

Ah the creature is so under appriciated. He is said to be the one who actually creates nightmares, hence where the word came from for our bad dreams. I've roleplayed one, since they can take on human form last time I checked, I like how the flames look well.. odd really. not like fire we know it as but i think it shows that the creature really is from another world

It's very nice. I looked at it while listening to "Hymn to the Night-Mare" by Leslie Fish, in order to set the mood properly, and found that I enjoyed the picture more than the song.

There is one issue, though: does a horse actually raise its front leg that far? I can't find any pictures just now that show it, and I haven't got a video that suits, so I can't really tell. It looks like the angle is a little extreme, but I'm not sure.

That one thing aside, though, it's excellent.

I love the eyes, and the way the black and red contrast against the background, and the way he seems to be a part of the mists and yet be so solid.

Maybe it's the horse from Johann Heinrich Füssli's "Nightmare"... But, yours is even better-looking!

What I like the most is the texture around his nozzle, neck and body; nice detail overall.

Excellent painting!
